Description:

Active membership in the ASAE Communication Professionals Advisory Council (“the Council”) is an opportunity to support content, learning, and engagement priorities of communications professionals and others in the association industry who benefit from best practices and diverse perspectives relevant to communications practitioners. Members serve a one-year term, renewable for up to three years.  
 
Council members work together virtuallyand, where possible, in personto identify and address key communication issues by seeking input from the broader communication professionals and other sources, fostering important discussions in the communication community, and contributing to the development of content and learning resources. Areas include communications and public relations strategy, content strategy and development, print and digital publications, social media and digital outreach management, media relations, crisis communications and other areas in the communications field. 
 
Eligibility Requirements 

  •  Currently serving in a communications role that includes managing or overseeing communications functions in an association and/or consulting on communications initiatives to associations. 
  •  Four or more years of professional communications experience preferred, with a minimum of one year serving in a communications role supporting one or more associations. 
  •  Broad communications expertise or deep expertise in a specific communications area (e.g., publishing, media relations, etc.) that would serve as a foundation for engaging Council members and ASAE’s Communications Professionals Community by participating in conversations on timely topics and cultivating and curating useful content. 
  •  Knowledge of communications issues faced by associations and professionals working in associations.  

 Application Criteria 

  •  Applications should address the following question: What contributions will you bring to the Council to further the association industry. 
  •  Applicants should clearly define how they can best serve in this group as outlined in the information provided in this Call for Volunteers. 

Selection 

Not all applicants will be accepted for the Council. The selection committee is composed of the incoming volunteer chair, the incoming volunteer vice chair, the outgoing volunteer chair, and the ASAE staff liaison. The ASAE staff liaison plays a supporting role in this process.  Final approval for all volunteers is given by the incoming chair of the ASAE Board.
 
Meetings 

  •  Orientation in mid-July 2025: This hour-long meeting is held virtually and is required for all new Council members. 
  •  Kickoff meeting in August 2025: This hour-long meeting is held virtually and is required of all Council members. Members are also welcome to join all the ASAE volunteers at the ASAE Annual Meeting & Expo for the thank you event on the morning of Saturday, August 9.
  •  Recurring Council meetings: These 60–90-minute Council meetings will be held virtually on a bimonthly basis and are required for all Council members. 
  •  Hybrid meeting at 2026 ASAE Marketing, Membership, Communications & Technology (MMCT) Conference: This meeting will take place in Washington, DC, to coincide with the 2026 MMCT Conference. Council members are required to participate, but an option to participate virtually will be made available to participants who cannot attend in-person. 

 Additional Information 

  •  New volunteers are required to attend the volunteer group’s orientation in order to serve. 
  •  In-person meetings are required, but Council members (or their organizations) must pay their own travel expenses if they elect to attend optional meetings in person.  
  •  Members may only serve in one volunteer group (council or committee) at a time.
