The Program: Training your board members sets the tone for the members’ positive board experience and lays the foundation for a smooth working relationship with your association staff. In this session, Eileen M. Johnson, CAE, Partner, Whiteford, Taylor & Preston, LLP, and co-chair of the firm’s association practice, will provide insight to how to effectively train your board. Participants will understand the board’s purpose, know the difference between staff and board roles and responsibilities, learn what needs to be included in your board handbook, know how to talk about the legal and fiduciary responsibilities of the board, understand how to use different distribution channels (podcasts, videos, social media, etc.) to provide board training, and learn how to effectively communicate with the board.
Our Speaker: Eileen has more than 30 years of experience advising nonprofit organizations and associations on a wide variety of legal issues, including tax advice, charitable solicitation and fundraising, membership programs, and employment issues. Before joining the firm, Eileen was in-house counsel for the National Wildlife Federation. She has held leadership roles in the Association Foundation Group, ASAE, and the Virginia State Bar. She received her law degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School of Brigham Young University in 1982, and is admitted in Virginia, the District of Columbia, Maryland and California.
