Hello! We are looking to simplify our conference call for proposals abstract review rubric. Ideally, we would have one that is general enough to be used to review both education-type abstracts and research. Our current review rubric is very complex. I wonder if anyone has any review rubrics that have worked well for you and if you'd be willing to share? Thanks for considering!

    Hi Rachel,

We simply do a one scale rating with a flagging option for "newsworthy" and "overly commercial" We used to use the NIH scale of 1-9 with 10 being a straight reject. Now we moved down to a 1-6 scale with 7 being reject.

Here are the instructions we send to our reviewers:

ASGCT scores abstracts on a scale of 1 to 6 with 1 being the highest score and 6 being the lowest score. A score of 7 is reserved for abstracts that are either too commercial or so poor in scientific quality that the reviewer feels the abstract shouldn't be presented at all. Reviewers should try to spread out their scores evenly across the range of 1 to 6, and approach the scores in terms of percentiles. Reviewers should not hesitate to give an abstract a score of 1 because they do not feel that it's exceptional. A score of 1 simply means it is in roughly the top sixth of all reviewed abstracts. Similarly, an abstract with a 6 is not necessarily a poor abstract; it is simply in the bottom sixth of reviewed abstracts. This will also help each committee in identifying which abstracts merit oral presentations. Abstracts with an average score of 1 to 2 will be far more likely to be accepted for oral presentation; scores of 3 to 6 will be more likely to be offered a poster.

    Hi Rachel,

Our annual program is a social science research conference. Here is the link to our 2025 CFP webpage which includes the abstract review criteria and rating scale.

    https://sswr.org/2025-conference-home/call-for-abstracts/

The rubric is made available when we send out the CFP to make submitters aware of how their abstracts will be reviewed. Our selection process is mostly based on scores; however, we allow our cluster/track chairs (approximately 85 people) to make subjective decisions in their own respective cluster/track as to which abstracts offer greater contribution to the conference overall.

    Hope this helps!
