Description:

The Legal Advisory Council is dedicated to disseminating knowledge and connecting professionals concerned with association legal issues.

The Projects for 2019-2020 include: 

  • Recommending and advising ASAE on ways to improve programs and services for Legal Section members;
  • Authoring the monthly Association Law & Policy (ALP) in ASAE’s Online articles.
  • Authoring the Good Counsel column in ASAE’s publication Associations NOW.
  • Advises ASAE Learning staff on the content of the Annual Association Law Symposium, actively helps promote, and ideally participates in the Conference;
  • Submitting proposals (or identify potential submitters from outside the council) to other ASAE conferences.
  • Considering ways to increase a sense of community amongst Legal Section professionals via social media, Collaborate, and other means.

The 2019-2020 Legal Section Council term will begin on September 1, 2019.


Meeting Requirements:
The Legal Advisory Council holds two in-person meetings each year. 

1. The first of these meetings is a mandatory kick off meeting at ASAE Headquarters in Washington, DC which will be held October 2nd, 2019.

2. The second in-person meeting will be in spring/summer 2020, which is usually held in conjunction with the Association Law Symposium.

3. There are also a series of teleconferences held throughout the year for the council and its subcommittees. 

Eligibility Requirements:              
7-10 years association industry experience
Legal association professional or In-house/Outside Counsel to associations/organizations
Engaged in ASAE (Volunteer, Conference Attendee, Contributor, etc.)

Disclaimer:

  • New volunteers are required to attend the volunteer group’s kickoff meeting in order to serve. There is no virtual option for this meeting.
  • Council members (or their organizations) pay their own travel expenses to attend meetings.   ASAE does not reimburse Board, Committee, or Council members for travel.
  • Members can only serve 1 (one) volunteer group (council or committee) at a time.
