“CAEing” – Are You Ready?! Tips for Taking the CAE Exam

Description of this session: This one-hour Virtual Luncheon, hosted by the ASAE Young Professionals Committee, provides a line-up of speakers who thoroughly understand the Certified Association Executive (CAE) process and appreciate its importance within the field. This webinar will provide you with an understanding of the entire CAE process, from the time you decide to submit your application, to being approved to sit for the exam, studying tips and tools and finally how your CAE designation will elevate your career and opportunities within the field.

Desired Outcomes:

1. Understand the CAE process; what it means to be a CAE and how to initiate the application process and understand next steps.
2. To prepare for the CAE exam with helpful tips from seasoned experts.
3. To demonstrate the overall importance of the CAE designation to supervisors and colleagues within the association field.

Lowell Aplebaum, CAE is the CEO and Strategy Catalyst of Vista Cova – a company that partners with organizations on strategic visioning and planning, creating stronger stakeholder connections, and reimagining value and engagement. Lowell frequently provides dynamic sessions to organizations – conducting deep-dive interviews and getting members and volunteers involved through experiential learning approaches. He currently serves as the Chair-Elect for the overseeing commission for the Certified Association Executive certification, and Chaired ASAE’s Task Force on CEO Pathways. He is the creator of a master-level learning series called Through the CEO Lens and Association Charrette – a co-creation retreat experience. His work on global efforts for associations has included experience across five continents, hundreds of volunteer groups, and all 50 states in the U.S.

Born and raised in Wisconsin’s capital city, Christina’s childhood as a farm girl led to her strong work ethic and achievements today as an association professional. She has been a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) since 2012, and serves as the Chair for ASAE’s Young Professionals Committee. Christina earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation in 2017, and was recently a recipient of the Forty Under 40® Award from Association Forum and USAE. She has worked with associations since 2008.

 Shawn’s career spans 23 years in the non-profit sector. His expertise in association management has driven positive growth for many organizations.

 Shawn is the Executive Director for the American Association of Anatomists (AAA) in Bethesda, MD. AAA is a $2 million, 501(c)(3) professional society committed to advancing anatomy through research, education, and professional development opportunities for its members. Prior to assuming his current role, Shawn served on the senior management team for the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC). During his career, he has also worked for a broad variety of other non-profit organizations including the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, Greater Washington Society of Association Executives, American Trucking Associations, and the Association of Corporate Counsel where he led the organization’s foundation and worked with the foundation’s Board of Directors on diversity and pro bono initiatives in the legal sector.

 Shawn served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) from 2014-2017. He was also named an ASAE Fellow in 2017. He served on ASAE’s Certified Association Executive (CAE) Commission, Professional Development Council, and Healthcare Community Committee.

In his role as Director of Communications and Technology with the Building Owners and Managers Association of Georgia (BOMA Georgia), Jacob Wilder, CAE, is responsible for producing the association’s publications, eCommunications, websites, awards programs, technology initiatives and membership recruitment.

As a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), Wilder earned the Certified Association Executive (CAE) designation in 2016 and earned his Membership Management Certification and Association Management Week (2014) certificate. Wilder also completed the Florida Society of Association Executive’s (FSAE) Qualified Association Specialist (QAS) certificate program. Jacob also serves vice chair of ASAE’s Young Professionals Committee, where he helps foster ASAE’s online community Collaborate and works with other members of the committee to develop content for ASAE programming.

As a member of the Georgia Society of Association Executives (GSAE), Wilder has served as chair of the Emerging Professionals Shared Interest Group, as well as co-chair in 2015. He was the recipient of the 2015 Sharon Hunt Emerging Leader Award from GSAE.

 Jacob is a graduate of Auburn University, Public Relations ’09. Graduating Summa Cum Laude, his internship work included Providence Baptist Church and Auburn University Office of Communications and Marketing. He specializes in social media, photography, public speaking and event promotion. Jacob attends Cartersville First Baptist Church where he serves on the AV Team and Men’s Ministry and is involved in church-based community service projects. He married his college sweetheart, Meg, on July 9, 2011 and they welcomed their first son, Jackson, into the world on August 29, 2015. They have a cat, Juliet, and a dog, Otto, and live in Cartersville, Ga.
