Happy Friday, Fellow Executives! I am updating our employee handbook and looking for sample bereavement leave policies. I am particularly interested in the length of leave offered. Any insights you are willing to share would be greatly appreciated! Thank you - Jade

    Hello

Ours is 3 days for immediate family only also. Having gone through the loss of my own father this month - and recognizing that 3 days is not even close to being enough to handle the grief, funeral arrangements, and taking care of all the after-death responsibilities, I am planning to change it. I am interested in hearing what others say. I am leaning toward 5 days with some flexibility for travel as well.

Thanks for asking the question, Jade.

    HI Jade:

Something to keep in mind is that some states have some statutes that require bereavement leave if the death was a result of a violent crime or the death of a child. The requirements can vary by employer size, but some food for thought when crafting your policies.
