    My board is establishing an assessment process for the CEO/Executive Director. Having recently left a management firm, this is a new arena for the board. Any insight or examples you are able to share would be greatly appreciated!

    One tip I think is crucial: use the same format from year to year so that the evaluations are consistent.

    We implemented a new CEO evaluation this past year and used BoardSource which was very well done.  It provided a 360 view including Board and staff surveys and the outcomes and delivery of information is compiled by BoardSource and delivered back to Board contact or who you provide as Facilitator.

    ASAE co-developed the CEO Assessment with BoardSource, and ASAE manages an updated version of the assessment as part of our new Association Governance Institute.

    Hi LeeAnn,

    Attached is a slide deck that lists the attributes of any process for CEO performance appraisal that can be considered effective. We address  this issue in ASAE's Symposium for Chief Executive and Chief Elected Officers in some detail. If you are interested in more specific information and samples of instruments please feel free to email me directly. 

    This is an area where there is no "best practice". But the attributes described in the slide deck are common to those approaches that both staff and member leaders find successful. The specifics of each dimension of the appraisal process is best developed with sensitivity to the context, condition, content, and culture of the association.
