  • 1.  Board election results - Reveal actual tally or not?

    Posted Jun 02, 2025 12:50 PM

    Our bylaws currently state:

"Upon their request, all candidates shall be notified about the number of votes cast for each candidate."

The current Chair of our Bylaws Committee is suggesting we revise our bylaws so that all voting members receive notice about the number of votes cast for each candidate. Our board has always felt that revealing the actual number of votes for each candidate might make those receiving the lowest number of votes leery of running again in future board elections.

Does your association share the actual count with voting members? Please share your thoughts on this subject. Thank you.

    Hi Katherine,

Our Bylaws outline a very simple and broad process for announcing or disclosing election results. As a matter of practice, we do not share the actual vote counts for each candidate-neither with the general membership nor with the candidates themselves. We only announce the total number of voters and the individuals elected.

I completely understand your concerns about sharing vote counts, especially for candidates who may have received fewer votes. It can indeed be discouraging and may deter future participation. While disclosing vote totals isn't inherently a liability, it can carry implications depending on the organization's policies, culture, privacy expectations, and how contentious the election may have been.

If your Bylaws are silent on this matter, you could consider sharing individual results privately with candidates upon request, rather than publicly or collectively. Looking ahead, you might want to formalize a policy that balances transparency with respect for candidates-for example, by amending the Bylaws to clarify how results will be shared, and ensuring that future candidates are informed in advance about what will be disclosed post-election.

    Hope this helps.

Although in my experience it appears to be a common practice among associations to not reveal vote counts except to the candidates, be sure to check the laws of the state where your association is incorporated to see what information must be made available to members on request.

    Hi,

We also do not share the results except with an individual candidate upon request. Thats interesting that this is actually dictated by law, we need to look into this!
