Agreed. There is a corollary - what you belong to must demonstrate its value and desire to understand you. Belonging is abstract. Associations must recognize that the ways of 20th Century belonging are not the way of our new Century. The environment is changing and adjusting to the new environment is required by the individual and the organization and causes to which we belong. I am much more comfortable with individual choices than the way organizations are responding. Casting off old ways requires courage and risk. Our associations are showing less courage. The march through the first three decades of the 21st century is demonstrating many weaknesses in the association community. In short, belonging is a two-way process. Thanks for reminding us of the human necessity to belong.

Belonging Matters
The most fundamental motivation among the human species is to belong. Belonging is implicit in sharing trust, affinity and caring about someone or something bigger than yourself. Renown philosopher Dan Dennett in a TED talk in 2006 encouraged everyone to dedicate and devote themselves to something more important than themselves to find meaning and purpose in their lives. We'll let you draw your own conclusions whether the audience of Silicon Valley entrepreneurs and investors were paying attention. We would add here that the point of communication is not the exchange of information but rather the exchange of understanding. And understanding is what makes belonging matter.
