Additional Information

Here are some suggestions on how to participate when you receive a Writer’s Pool e-mail from ASAE Senior Editor Mark Athitakis (mathitakis@asaecenter.org):

·        Suggest a source in response to a writer’s pool question. I personally have received great feedback from the pool when I’ve been working on stories, and I know that my colleagues have had similar experiences. (It’s perfectly fine to recommend yourself as a source.) The stories listed for upcoming issues are often still in process as well, so ideas you might have for those are welcome too; just send me an email and I’ll direct the message to the appropriate writer or editor.

·        Suggest an article idea. We have weekly story meetings and monthly idea-generation meetings, and we often discuss ideas that come in from readers and writer’s pool contributors. You don’t have to write those stories yourself, but you could….

·        Write an article. Typically, these are brief articles (400-600 words) that would run online in one of ASAE’s section newsletters, which cover a variety of topics in association management. In these cases, we’re looking for how-to articles that address a particular problem (effective marketing communications, increasing meeting attendance, stronger advocacy efforts). If you’re not sure if an article idea might be right for the magazine, just let me know what you’re thinking, and I’ll be happy to discuss it. There are also limited opportunities to contribute features in the magazine and guest blog posts at AssociationsNow.com; get in touch if you’d like to learn more.

To be clear, your participation in the writer’s pool does not mean that all or any of these activities are required. Unlike some committees, we’re not assigning tasks and deadlines, and we do not keep track of who is and isn’t responding to messages. We offer the writer’s pool simply as a way for the magazine to build a closer relationship with our members, and to give members a “behind the scenes” look at how the magazine comes together.
